Hurley is known to comment on my blog on occassion as Scott aka vern. Hurley is the most charmingly obscene, frightfully obnoxious, wickedly funny, full of life character you will EVER have the pleasure of encountering. He is the kind of guy , that makes YOU let loose.. especially in Key West.. Just look what he did to FFH(firefighter husband) and me!

As you can tell by the clarity and focus of the picture, he was having just as much, if not more, fun than us!!
He speaks his own language. I call it Hurley-ism. He should have his own following with all his umm, philosophies and thoughts on life. Here are some of his favorite thoughts, doings, and sayings:
- SAYING..Let's shit and git (that means Let's Go)
- SAYING..I don't drink beer every day, only days that end in Y.
- He named the Bloody Mary, the Breakfast of Champions.
- SAYING..If it smells like fish, its a dish, if it smells like cologne, leave it alone.
- SAYING..I haven't had a solid shit since the day I got married, it is always now just a whoosh. He swears to God.
- When slightly buzzed, he will say "I'm polluted."
- On any given day his belly is called Good Groceries, or Good Living, as he holds it from the bottom and lifts it up and down.
- Hurley calls NO ONE by their name, everyone has a nickname, ingenious nicknames made up in his head. Want to know mine? He calls me Porn Queen ( really lovely), His wife is Queen Bee, my FFH is Vern, and it goes on.
- He eats his cheerios with beer, not milk, on camping trips.
- Made me a firm believer of the saying.. What happens in Key West, stays in Key West!
- And,One of my most favorite Hurley-isms is, Why fart and waste it, when you can burp and taste it?
I could go on, but I would have to start a Dianetics series. And I would want part of the profit, because HE would be a best-seller.
Hurley is an original, excellent cook. My FFH had the pleasure of being in Florida for 5 days and got to visit with his sister Sandy and her husband Hurley. Hurley made his famous White Castle Burgers.
When I lived in Yonkers, NY they were known as Murder Burgers. My FFH who lived in NJ all his life, always called them Rat Burgers. But Oh MY Good Lord in Heaven.. there is NOT one person who has tried a Hurley Burger and not liked it. There are raves about these White Castle-like burgers from everyone who has had them. He graciously let me have the recipe, and allowed my FFH to photo him only for the small price of a 2 cases of beer and 3 porno flicks! Kidding.. maybe..
Let us begin:
Gather your ingredients.

You must have the Bud Light to drink while making these according to the Hurlster. For the prep: Chop up a bunch of onions,

in a small dice. Set aside.

Put your meat --The meat must be 85% so the fat makes it good and greasy so it will just slide down your throat!-in a large bowl, and add a BLOB of peanut butter, yes he said BLOB, no measurement folks... Couldnt you just strangle him??
Then Add your soup mix,

Then add your milk .

Mix it all together with your hands!

Here is Sandy, Hurley's wife, mixing while he chops the onions.. Isn't she a cutie pie?
Beer break for Hurley..

Break the mixture into 2 and place on 2 ungreased baking pans.
Begin to roll out the meat with a rolling pin, then pat it with your hands, all the way to the edges.
Then roll it with the rolling pin again to smooth it out.

Put it in a 350 degree oven for about 10 minutes. When the meat shrinks a lot, like this,

take it out of the oven and put the diced onions all around the edges to flavor the meat.
Place back in the oven for about 10 minutes..While all this is going on you must be multitasking with other aspects of the recipe. This meal would not be complete without deep fried onion rings and deep fried fries. He buys them frozen and deep fries them in oil.

Now, you also must set up your dinner rolls and your cheese.
Pay attetnion here it is tricky.. Take your roll, place the bottom part of the roll face-not bottom- down, top with the top of the roll right side up , getting them ready for the meat. And slice up your cheese.
OK now when you take out your meat and onions, scatter some raw onions on top of the meat, and top them with cheese if you'd like,
or not.. they did one tray with and one without. Place your buns directly on top of the cheese and raw onions, lined up together like so,

obviously, this is the tray without the cheese.. and put back on oven for another 10 minutes to warm the rolls, and melt the cheese a bit. Take them out and cut them with a pizza cutter along the lines of the buns. Pick them up one by one , flip them over, and top with the top. You will have a helluva lot of white castle Hurley burgers!
IMPORTANT HINT!! HURLEY says the best way to time the process is to have a beer between each cooking time step!!
Have your condiments ready.. ketchup, pickles, and mustard, dress as you like.
MUST be served with deep fried fries and deep onion rings as so!
Does that not look like a thing of beauty??

Hurley also advises that you can
NOT have this meal without a Vanilla milkshake, so get yourself some Breyers vanilla,

some milk, and a dash of imitation vanilla, and blend it up. HAS to be served with the burgers for a mind blowing experience.
THANK YOU Hurley, Thank you Sandy for sharing.. I only wish I was there with you guys!!. But when I get there, I fully expect a 10 course meal outta you Big Guy!
Hear me Hurley,UMMM,Hurley, come in, Hurley! Please freakin wake up before I get there! Miss ya's! XXOO
that is such a cool way of making these - I will be trying it in the next few days and I will post about it too - thanks to you and Hurly!
ReplyDeleteyum - those look great. And the fart and waste it comment......so my husband. Gotta love them!
ReplyDeleteThis is super cool! Peanut Butter...really!? How fun (to be a fly on the wall at one of ur get togethers...lol). Tell Hurley these rock...my hubby would love 'em. I love the method. Boy, I'm gushing, aren't I?
ReplyDeleteI just had my first White Castle Burgers while visiting NY at the beginning of the month, I can't wait to surprise my husband with these.
ReplyDeleteCheers!
Fun pics. The food sound delicious!
ReplyDeleteHe sounds like a real character! The pictures are fun to look at.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like the PERFECT menu for my Hubby's Grad. party! Yay! Thank you, Thank you, both of you :)
ReplyDeleteThat's a really ingenious way of cooking burgers, especially for a crowd! Very cool.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to be making your malt ball cookies today, BTW.
Peanut butter in burgers - sounds like a secret ingredient :) They look super tasty!
ReplyDeleteWOW these sound just like some we used to get at "Mom's" in Westwood. Thanks for stopping by ~ it's nice to meet you.
ReplyDeleteWhat a hilarious guy! The burgers sound good too - something to make next time we have a crowd around.
ReplyDeleteWow, what a neat way to make these! Thumbs up, Hurley!
ReplyDeleteWow he has got that down!!! Now with the ice cream were is the root beer, and you know what I am going to do with that right? Floats for every one...
ReplyDeleteOMG, you are evil for even daring to show that to me while I am holed up at the office grading horrific undergrad papers and can't get to food.
ReplyDeleteYour brother in law sounds like a riot! I can't wait to try his recipe, the peanut butter has me intrigued!
ReplyDeleteThanks for commenting on my blog so I could check yours out and learn how to make WCs. My husband LOVES 'em. Your blog is so funny. I love people who like to laugh while they cook.
ReplyDeleteThose look amazing. I have never heard of adding PB to hamburger before, but you can bet that I'm going to try it! What a fun BIL!
ReplyDeleteHurley sounds like quite the riot! I have to tell ya my eyebrows shot way up on some of those saying. Only saying I've heard is the "polluted" one as we'll tell each other that after someone has passed gas.
ReplyDeleteTell the ol Hurlmiester thanks for the recipe. Fun way to make burgers!
~ingrid
Well now I am good and homesick for White Castle. When I lived on Long Island we called them belly bombers and I remember when they were 18 cents -- long time ago!!! I LOVE White Castle. We do not have them down here and no - I will not buy the frozen ones.....Hurley's burgers look great and surprisingly they look like the REAL thing!!! I've never seen anyone try to make them before. Great job Hurley!!!
ReplyDeleteI bet when you all get together it is some good times!!! What a creative burger, they look soooo good!!
ReplyDeleteI got my shit straight! I am back! I missed you, and your BIL sounds like a hoot to me! and those burgers, amazing, I have only had them from the frozen aisle in the grocery store, we dont have White Castles around these parts!
ReplyDeleteWe love White Castle Burgers here in the Bluegrass State. What a great recipe!
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to tell you that you've gained a new fan. My husband (who is also a fire fighter) heard me laughing at the computer and had to see what was so funny. He laughed his butt off and now has to read all your new posts! These burgers look great. I never would have thought to press all the meat in the pan like that and then cut them after they are cooked. Great idea.
ReplyDeleteI really love how the timing of things is done by drinkin'. Sounds like a fun time... and they look awesome too! I'd love me a burger right about now.
ReplyDeleteWe don't have White Castles in California. I was in St. Lois, two years ago. My SIL thought I was nuts, but I requested to eat at one. Big Whoop, is all I can say? Square, greasy burgers with no real flavor. But these.... these look sinfully good! I'll have to forward this to my SIL. She'll laugh at me.
ReplyDeleteYeah, the beer is what looks really good!
Thanks for all the pictures!! I have to learn how to do that?? Another blogger (JennyMac) gave me an awesome lesson but I have yet to be able to pull it off. All my pictures end up at the top of the blog? Anyway, I love the method of preparation for the burgers. Your family sounds like a lot of fun!!
ReplyDeleteI have to try these - thanks so much for sharing. I just love your blog - added to my google reader.
ReplyDeleteI wish I had this recipe when I was pregnant...White Castle was my weakness!!!!
ReplyDeleteHurley is quite the character. We have several like him in our family, the most notorious being my Uncle George. But I digress. I am from the South, therefore I must adore White Castle/Crystal burgers. But I have to tell you, I never would have come up with the idea of baking them on cookie sheets! Ingenious.
ReplyDelete:) K
Whoa these look freaking awesome! Can't beat greasy burgers with greasy fries and o-rings. Deeelicious! Hurley sounds like a load of fun!
ReplyDeleteWe don't have White Castle up here in Alaska, but these burgers look delicious! I'm definitely going to have to give this a try.
ReplyDeleteI chuckled throughout that whole recipe. What great enterainment.... Peanut butter, who'd a thunk it?! I put the answers up to the riddles on my blog...
ReplyDeleteWhat a hoot! And he can cook too!
ReplyDeleteIt's 2 am and me and my husband are looking at this and getting terribly hungry.....they look so good.....i will definately try because I am curious about the peanut butter....
ReplyDeleteThat's one helluva burger. can't say I've ever seen anything like it.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a fun burger recipe! Very unusual with peanut butter, and soup mix, and milk - I'm definitely curious to try this!
ReplyDeleteWow....And, look at that meat shrinkage!!! And the peanut butter! And the fries! Now, all they need is a plate of those Unbelievably Delicious Brownies with all the butter and sugar!
ReplyDeleteHe could teach White Castle a thing or two..
ReplyDeleteWhite Castle needs him... well, they need something!
ReplyDeleteBud makes us wiser...& HOW!! Great post Donna...& hysterically funny! Never seen a burger like this, & never seen a BIL like this either!! LOL!
ReplyDeleteThese look really good - I've heard of peanut butter mashed potatoes, I don't think I've ever seen peanut butter burgers though! PS, I went to Home Depot yesterday and thought of you :)
ReplyDeletePB in the meat? WOw...never would have thought of it. But they look awesome, I'm not gonna argue!
ReplyDeletePeanut butter?! Who would've guessed?! These burgers sound delicious. I already love Hurley and I've never even met him. He sounds like a total riot. And I just love his sayings: I mean, the burp it up and taste it saying has to be one of the most classic lines I've ever heard!
ReplyDeleteOh man! I would go straight into a coma after this one! Too bad it takes so many steps, as this would be the most amazing late night food! Lucky girl to have such a fun BIL!
ReplyDeleteThat's it .. the next time I'm in Key West (and there will be a "next time" 'coz DH & I LOVE it) I will track down Hurley, kidnap him if I have to, and get him to make those burgers, PRONTO! Btw, you and FFH look so cute together in those pics ... if you can call giddy groping cute ;)
ReplyDeletei am number 1 am the man. no the vern
ReplyDeletedrink lots of beer a k a daddys juice
ReplyDeleteHey Donna! These look fantastic! As soon as I get rid of the comatose feeling that describes me on antibiotics, I'm makin' 'em!
ReplyDeleteWOW! Hurley sounds awesome! and these burgers sound even better!!!!
ReplyDeleteVery unique recipe, and I bet it's delicious. What a character for BIL, LOF.
ReplyDeleteI will definitely remember this for when my brother is home - who loves WC burgers. I have never had one!!!
ReplyDeleteBTW, Hurley is also my cat's name. However, I think my cat is much more innocent than that BIL of yours!
As Cheryl said we do not have White Castle around here unless you get the frozen ones at the store, I think your fresh version looks wonderful and of course taste much better than the frozen
ReplyDeleteWith peanut butter? Woohoooo... so new for me but I bet it's very delicious!
ReplyDeleteSlurpppp... vanilla milkshake!
Nice!!!! I can't wait to try those!!!
ReplyDeletewau, that castle burger looks amazing, Ihave never tryed something like that, I will probably make it on my birthday.
ReplyDeleteCIAO
I can't remember the last time I had a White Castle burger. Thanks for bringing them home Donna. My family will love making these and eating these at home!
ReplyDeleteHurley they look so cute they remind me of those little BURGER KING BURGERS. Good Job Donna.
ReplyDeleteI thought this was going to have some connection to “Lost” when I saw the name Hurley (although his tendency to give everyone nicknames sounds more like Sawyer.)
ReplyDeleteMy brother used to burp out loud and say the same thing. “ I’d rather burp and taste it than fart and waste it. “ My college roommate used to say when you burped out loud, “Bring that up later and we’ll vote on it.”
I hardly ever get to eat White Castle burgers because I either have to drive to dicey neighborhoods in the Bronx or over an hour north or south in NJ or CT. I think I was still in grade school the last time I had one.
PB burgers? Why not? If you say it's good, I'll totally believe you.
That makes me wonder though. Do people ever put really bizarre and inedible recipes on their blogs and say they're wonderful, just to see if people will actually try them? Now I'm in the mood for a practical joke...
Nice burgers but the onions rings are my favorite. Speaking of white castle, have you seen the movie...Harold and Kumar go to white castle?
ReplyDeleteI am laughing out loud about the "fart and waste it" comment!! And those burgers look to die for! When I saw the peanut butter, I immediately started salivating. (Think of that what you will...) Thank you, Hurley, for those delicious-looking burgers!!
ReplyDeleteI've only had frozen white castle burgers...these look SO MUCH better. I'll take two or three please.
ReplyDeleteI think I would absolutely love Hurley. I love that he burps too! and those sayings...he better copyright it! they're hilarious!!
ReplyDeleteI've never had white castle burgers but I know people who swear by them. These look like quite the treat!!! I'm not sure how I feel about the peanut butter though!!!!!! :)
ReplyDeleteWAIT, is that pb in a burger??? What is this you say? Now THAT is intriguing...
ReplyDeleteAlso: Krystal's is better than White Castle. :)
Whoa ha... ha..., it's so hysterically hilarious! He cooks too?
ReplyDeleteCheers,
elra
TELL ME WHY THERE IS PEANUT BUTTER? I AM GOING TO MAKE THESE TODAY!!!!
ReplyDeleteLOL, Hurley sounds like my husband. Dang girl! Those look awesome! I am making those tonight for sure! I usually just buy the little frozen ones and put ketchup on them.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful and colorful blog you have! It was nice having you visit mine.. thank you for your sweet comment. :) P.S. That parika flank steak is totally calling out to me!
ReplyDeleteYa know, I can honestly say I've never thought of using my rolling pin for ground meat!! Hilarious, I love it!
ReplyDeleteHoly Shiz, Donna. I am not kidding when I say that is what the hubs will have in his pants when I tell him that I have a recipe for White Castle Burgers. My sister, my brother, my father too...I am serious, you have made me a hero.
ReplyDeleteI don't care why there is peanut butter, if you and Hurley say it should be there...then it should be there.
;) amy
The peanut butter is freaking me out but I just know my father would love these! And man am I in the mood for some Key West weather!
ReplyDeleteI've done this but never with peanut butter! Very curious how that came to be. Sure looks delish.
ReplyDeleteMary
Growing up in Queens, White Castle was across the street from church. If we went to church - we got a White Castle burger... or 2 ... or ... or more. In the summer, the bribery was Carvel. That church sure had a good location!
ReplyDeleteI have been dying for junk food lately! Sounds so good!!!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, Hurley sounds like quite the character. :) He has great taste in burgers! Nicely done.
ReplyDelete"Porn Queen?" Hurley needs a nickname himself! I do love the peanut butter addition in the burgers, that seems so wrong, yet so right!
ReplyDeleteOkay the PB is an amazing idea. This is going to be a hit my next party...I think it's brilliant.
ReplyDeletePeanut Butter? Hmmmmmm, I'm gonna give 'em a try. Thanks for the recipe. Why are BIL always like that?
ReplyDeleteI've never lived in a state that has White Castles restaurants so I only know about them from other people. The burgers have always looked delish to me!
ReplyDeleteSounds like the perfect drinking dinner! I haven't had White Castle but I hear they are the best. Really interested in adding peanut butter I'm gonna have to give this a try.
ReplyDeleteHe has a great sense of humour. Great post.
ReplyDeleteMy boyfriend is going to live this - he loves White Castle but there aren't any in Canada.
ReplyDeletePeanut butter & ground beef, that's so interesting. These really do look insanely good though. My hubby would love them!
ReplyDeleteI made these last night, they were sooooooo good!
ReplyDeleteI have to say Donna, I made your BIL's burgers twice now~what a hit! They are way better than the real deal!! Which is soo great when you live 5 hours away from any White Castle!!:-)
ReplyDeleteI also have to say that after reading some of your other recipes, that I think you would make a fine Passion Party Consultant!! Woo hoo, girl, you've got it goin on! Thanks for sharing!
Sharing the Passion,
Meredith
Hurley sounds like a hoot :) And it looks like he can make a mean burger too! Mmmm white castle...
