White Castle Burgers ala Hurley, MY BIL

White Castle Burgers AKA My BIL's Hurley Burgers

Hurley is my brother-in-law.

Hurley is known to comment on my blog on occassion as Scott aka vern. Hurley is the most charmingly obscene, frightfully obnoxious, wickedly funny, full of life character you will EVER have the pleasure of encountering. He is the kind of guy , that makes YOU let loose.. especially in Key West.. Just look what he did to FFH(firefighter husband) and me!
As you can tell by the clarity and focus of the picture, he was having just as much, if not more, fun than us!!

He speaks his own language. I call it Hurley-ism. He should have his own following with all his umm, philosophies and thoughts on life. Here are some of his favorite thoughts, doings, and sayings:

  • SAYING..Let's shit and git (that means Let's Go)
  • SAYING..I don't drink beer every day, only days that end in Y.
  • He named the Bloody Mary, the Breakfast of Champions.
  • SAYING..If it smells like fish, its a dish, if it smells like cologne, leave it alone.
  • SAYING..I haven't had a solid shit since the day I got married, it is always now just a whoosh. He swears to God.
  • When slightly buzzed, he will say "I'm polluted."
  • On any given day his belly is called Good Groceries, or Good Living, as he holds it from the bottom and lifts it up and down.
  • Hurley calls NO ONE by their name, everyone has a nickname, ingenious nicknames made up in his head. Want to know mine? He calls me Porn Queen ( really lovely), His wife is Queen Bee, my FFH is Vern, and it goes on.
  • He eats his cheerios with beer, not milk, on camping trips.
  • Made me a firm believer of the saying.. What happens in Key West, stays in Key West!
  • And,One of my most favorite Hurley-isms is, Why fart and waste it, when you can burp and taste it?
I could go on, but I would have to start a Dianetics series. And I would want part of the profit, because HE would be a best-seller.

Hurley is an original, excellent cook. My FFH had the pleasure of being in Florida for 5 days and got to visit with his sister Sandy and her husband Hurley. Hurley made his famous White Castle Burgers.

When I lived in Yonkers, NY they were known as Murder Burgers. My FFH who lived in NJ all his life, always called them Rat Burgers. But Oh MY Good Lord in Heaven.. there is NOT one person who has tried a Hurley Burger and not liked it. There are raves about these White Castle-like burgers from everyone who has had them. He graciously let me have the recipe, and allowed my FFH to photo him only for the small price of a 2 cases of beer and 3 porno flicks! Kidding.. maybe..

Let us begin:

Gather your ingredients.
You must have the Bud Light to drink while making these according to the Hurlster. For the prep: Chop up a bunch of onions,
in a small dice. Set aside.
Put your meat --The meat must be 85% so the fat makes it good and greasy so it will just slide down your throat!-in a large bowl, and add a BLOB of peanut butter, yes he said BLOB, no measurement folks... Couldnt you just strangle him??
Then Add your soup mix,
Then add your milk .
Mix it all together with your hands!
Here is Sandy, Hurley's wife, mixing while he chops the onions.. Isn't she a cutie pie?
Beer break for Hurley..

Break the mixture into 2 and place on 2 ungreased baking pans.

Begin to roll out the meat with a rolling pin, then pat it with your hands, all the way to the edges.
Then roll it with the rolling pin again to smooth it out.
Put it in a 350 degree oven for about 10 minutes. When the meat shrinks a lot, like this,
take it out of the oven and put the diced onions all around the edges to flavor the meat.
Place back in the oven for about 10 minutes..While all this is going on you must be multitasking with other aspects of the recipe. This meal would not be complete without deep fried onion rings and deep fried fries. He buys them frozen and deep fries them in oil.

Now, you also must set up your dinner rolls and your cheese.

Pay attetnion here it is tricky.. Take your roll, place the bottom part of the roll face-not bottom- down, top with the top of the roll right side up , getting them ready for the meat. And slice up your cheese.

OK now when you take out your meat and onions, scatter some raw onions on top of the meat, and top them with cheese if you'd like,
or not.. they did one tray with and one without. Place your buns directly on top of the cheese and raw onions, lined up together like so,
obviously, this is the tray without the cheese.. and put back on oven for another 10 minutes to warm the rolls, and melt the cheese a bit. Take them out and cut them with a pizza cutter along the lines of the buns. Pick them up one by one , flip them over, and top with the top. You will have a helluva lot of white castle Hurley burgers!

IMPORTANT HINT!! HURLEY says the best way to time the process is to have a beer between each cooking time step!!

Have your condiments ready.. ketchup, pickles, and mustard, dress as you like.

MUST be served with deep fried fries and deep onion rings as so!

Does that not look like a thing of beauty??
Hurley also advises that you can NOT have this meal without a Vanilla milkshake, so get yourself some Breyers vanilla,
some milk, and a dash of imitation vanilla, and blend it up. HAS to be served with the burgers for a mind blowing experience.

THANK YOU Hurley, Thank you Sandy for sharing.. I only wish I was there with you guys!!. But when I get there, I fully expect a 10 course meal outta you Big Guy!

Hear me Hurley,UMMM,Hurley, come in, Hurley! Please freakin wake up before I get there! Miss ya's! XXOO

  17. Hurley sounds like quite the riot! I have to tell ya my eyebrows shot way up on some of those saying. Only saying I've heard is the "polluted" one as we'll tell each other that after someone has passed gas.

Tell the ol Hurlmiester thanks for the recipe. Fun way to make burgers!

  18. Well now I am good and homesick for White Castle. When I lived on Long Island we called them belly bombers and I remember when they were 18 cents -- long time ago!!! I LOVE White Castle. We do not have them down here and no - I will not buy the frozen ones.....Hurley's burgers look great and surprisingly they look like the REAL thing!!! I've never seen anyone try to make them before. Great job Hurley!!!

  22. Just wanted to tell you that you've gained a new fan. My husband (who is also a fire fighter) heard me laughing at the computer and had to see what was so funny. He laughed his butt off and now has to read all your new posts! These burgers look great. I never would have thought to press all the meat in the pan like that and then cut them after they are cooked. Great idea.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I really love how the timing of things is done by drinkin'. Sounds like a fun time... and they look awesome too! I'd love me a burger right about now.

  24. We don't have White Castles in California. I was in St. Lois, two years ago. My SIL thought I was nuts, but I requested to eat at one. Big Whoop, is all I can say? Square, greasy burgers with no real flavor. But these.... these look sinfully good! I'll have to forward this to my SIL. She'll laugh at me.

Yeah, the beer is what looks really good!

  25. Thanks for all the pictures!! I have to learn how to do that?? Another blogger (JennyMac) gave me an awesome lesson but I have yet to be able to pull it off. All my pictures end up at the top of the blog? Anyway, I love the method of preparation for the burgers. Your family sounds like a lot of fun!!

  28. Hurley is quite the character. We have several like him in our family, the most notorious being my Uncle George. But I digress. I am from the South, therefore I must adore White Castle/Crystal burgers. But I have to tell you, I never would have come up with the idea of baking them on cookie sheets! Ingenious.

    :) K

    ReplyDelete
  41. Peanut butter?! Who would've guessed?! These burgers sound delicious. I already love Hurley and I've never even met him. He sounds like a total riot. And I just love his sayings: I mean, the burp it up and taste it saying has to be one of the most classic lines I've ever heard!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Oh man! I would go straight into a coma after this one! Too bad it takes so many steps, as this would be the most amazing late night food! Lucky girl to have such a fun BIL!

    ReplyDelete

BTW, Hurley is also my cat's name. However, I think my cat is much more innocent than that BIL of yours!

    ReplyDelete
  50. As Cheryl said we do not have White Castle around here unless you get the frozen ones at the store, I think your fresh version looks wonderful and of course taste much better than the frozen

    ReplyDelete
  53. I can't remember the last time I had a White Castle burger. Thanks for bringing them home Donna. My family will love making these and eating these at home!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Hurley they look so cute they remind me of those little BURGER KING BURGERS. Good Job Donna.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I thought this was going to have some connection to “Lost” when I saw the name Hurley (although his tendency to give everyone nicknames sounds more like Sawyer.)

My brother used to burp out loud and say the same thing. “ I’d rather burp and taste it than fart and waste it. “ My college roommate used to say when you burped out loud, “Bring that up later and we’ll vote on it.”

I hardly ever get to eat White Castle burgers because I either have to drive to dicey neighborhoods in the Bronx or over an hour north or south in NJ or CT. I think I was still in grade school the last time I had one.

PB burgers? Why not? If you say it's good, I'll totally believe you.

That makes me wonder though. Do people ever put really bizarre and inedible recipes on their blogs and say they're wonderful, just to see if people will actually try them? Now I'm in the mood for a practical joke...

    ReplyDelete
  56. Nice burgers but the onions rings are my favorite. Speaking of white castle, have you seen the movie...Harold and Kumar go to white castle?

    ReplyDelete
  57. I am laughing out loud about the "fart and waste it" comment!! And those burgers look to die for! When I saw the peanut butter, I immediately started salivating. (Think of that what you will...) Thank you, Hurley, for those delicious-looking burgers!!

    ReplyDelete
  58. I've only had frozen white castle burgers...these look SO MUCH better. I'll take two or three please.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I think I would absolutely love Hurley. I love that he burps too! and those sayings...he better copyright it! they're hilarious!!

    ReplyDelete
  60. I've never had white castle burgers but I know people who swear by them. These look like quite the treat!!! I'm not sure how I feel about the peanut butter though!!!!!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  61. WAIT, is that pb in a burger??? What is this you say? Now THAT is intriguing...

Also: Krystal's is better than White Castle. :)

    ReplyDelete
  62. Whoa ha... ha..., it's so hysterically hilarious! He cooks too?
    Cheers,

I don't care why there is peanut butter, if you and Hurley say it should be there...then it should be there.

  70. Growing up in Queens, White Castle was across the street from church. If we went to church - we got a White Castle burger... or 2 ... or ... or more. In the summer, the bribery was Carvel. That church sure had a good location!

  71. I have been dying for junk food lately! Sounds so good!!!

    ReplyDelete
  72. Oh my goodness, Hurley sounds like quite the character. :) He has great taste in burgers! Nicely done.

    ReplyDelete
